Airelooms’s new Karpen collections are named in the honor and memory of its founder, King Karpen, who started the Aireloom company in the early 1940s.  Although technically not a king, his name was appropriate, for he was the creator and king of what would become some of the world’s most exquisite luxury mattresses.  He planted his factory in Southern California, and it’s no coincidence the earliest owners of Aireloom mattresses included Hollywood stars such as John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Ronald & Nancy Reagan.  Ron & Nancy loved their Aireloom so much, that when they moved to the White House, they replaced all of the guest room mattresses with Aireloom.

King Karpen grew up in the mattress industry and was the third generation in his family to learn the trade.  By 1950, he had lost most of his sight, but his ability to create a sublime mattress only improved with his heightened sense of touch and feel.  He had such an intimate knowledge of the machinery in his factory that he could feel a broken part with his hands and know how it needed to be repaired.

After King Karpen passed away in 1992 at the age of 80, the Aireloom company was purchased by Earl Kluft, another third-generation mattress maker.  Earl was a perfectionist and to say it in a nice way, “drove his employees crazy” with his obsessive pursuit of the perfect mattress.  In an age where many things were being mass produced, Earl encouraged his employees to slow down and do it right.   The Karpen collections were created by Earl in honor of the company founder, King Karpen.  Earl has now also passed away just this last June.  It is these two men who we owe a debt of gratitude for the incredible mattresses produced by Aireloom today.

The Karpen beds have quickly become one of the most popular choices among our customers, and it is no surprise, for they are extremely comfortable, well-made and come in a range of tension options from plush to firm and everything in between.   And for those of you who like extra plush, or a firm foundation with a soft top, the Karpen topper, made from Talalay latex, wool & cashmere, makes these beds feel extra heavenly.

There are two Karpen collections, the Karpen Luxury Collection and Karpen Sidestitch Collection. The Sidestitch Collection is handmade with over 45 pounds of natural cotton, 54 inner tufts, and sealed together with 560 of their heritage side-stitches.  The Karpen Luxury Collection features pocketed springs, microcoils, high quality Talalay latex and other foams, topped with silk, wool and cashmere and layered in the patented Aireloom Lift, a method of construction which allows each layer of the mattress to adapt and respond to your body which creates a unique cradling and lifting feeling.
